The Irish Solicitors Bar Association, London

The Irish Solicitors Bar Association, London was founded by Cliona O’Tuama and other Irish solicitors in London in 1988 to lobby The Law Society of England and Wales to enable Irish-qualified solicitors to be re-admitted in England and Wales without having to sit any further examinations.

In 1991, due to the work of the Association, Irish solicitors became entitled to be re-admitted in England and Wales without any further formalities. The work of the Association at that time has enabled many Irish solicitors to embark on successful careers in London in the years since then. There are now Irish solicitors at all levels in most major London law firms. Others, like Cliona O’Tuama, now run their own firms.

In 1989 the Association decided to host an annual Charity Ball, which quickly became a major event in the London and Dublin legal calendars. Most of the top Irish firms supported the Ball, as did many London firms and members of the Bar. The Ball, called the Autumn Ball, was held in early November. The twenty five Balls held between 1989 and 2014 raised over £520,000 for charities helping children and young people.

A special Ball was held in 2019, thirty years after the first Ball, to support Solving Kids’ Cancer and raised £44,000 for this very worthy cause.
