Cliona O’Tuama is a private client lawyer.

She read law at University College Dublin and graduated with a BCL degree. She qualified as a solicitor in Ireland in 1977 and subsequently sat the examinations of the Irish Taxation Institute to become an associate.

She practised for several years in the private client department of a major Dublin practice where she dealt with all aspects of probate, tax and trusts.

Recognised by the Irish Taxation Institute as having extensive knowledge of capital acquisitions tax, in 1981 the Institute asked her to lecture in capital acquisitions tax to its associateship students and she lectured at the Institute until 1987.

In 1987 she moved to London to work in the Trusts Department of Linklaters & Paines (now Linklaters), one of the leading international law firms in the City. She was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1991.

After leaving Linklaters, in 1994 she established her own firm to provide a niche practice to advise on all aspects of private client work and charity law.

She has lectured to STEP and the Irish Taxation Institute on UK inheritance tax and other aspects of estate planning.  She has written extensively on UK inheritance tax and Irish capital acquisitions tax. She is the author of the chapter on UK inheritance tax in the Irish Taxation Institute’s book on capital acquisitions tax, an annual publication. She is known in London as one of the leading experts on UK-Irish tax planning.

With over 25 years experience of private client work in Dublin and London, she is uniquely placed to provide a bespoke service to Irish solicitors and trust corporations. Equally, she is uniquely placed to advise private individuals about wills and estate planning.
